The "Edu" portion of the trip takes us to a town school in the Cayo District of Belize, Central America. Focusing on one school each trip allows us to build relationships with the learners and the teachers. The first morning is spent observing classroom practice and meeting with teachers and administrators. These experiences provide context for our work. We also connect with the learners we will work with so they are more comfortable engaging with us on subsequent days. During the rest of the mornings, we engage in learning experiences with small groups of learners. Kathleen and I will coach and provide feedback and moments of insight to enhance your practice and ideas to take back to your classrooms. At the end of the week, we donate supplies, toys and games to the children and school as a 'thank you' for their time with us. Some say it's the favorite part of their trip! The professional growth continues in the evenings as we enjoy collaborative sessions while relaxing in hammocks surrounded by the smells, sounds, and beauty of the jungle. We reflect on the day, connect big ideas and new understandings to our practices at home, and collaborate on lesson ideas for the next day.
